Tirana International Airport has a new terminal and will feature digital passport scanners to replace traditional police checks.
The expanded terminal comes with an additional eight gates to accommodate an expansion in the number of flights.
Additionally, TIA will now now feature new digital passport scanners that recognize Albanian, EU, UK, US and Canadian passports. Other travelers will still need use traditional passport checks.
On Sunday, Rama visited Rinas to inaugurate the new terminal.
“This is a very welcome investment given the fact that the airport was facing tremendous pressure as a result of the unexpected increase in the number of passengers to be served,” Rama said in his speech.
According to the Prime Minister, some 4 million passengers passed through Tirana International in the past six months.
Two more airports are under construction, in the southern cities of Vlora and Saranda. Kukës International Airport in the north was inaugurated last June.
