Tirana Prosecutor Nela Faces Vetting, KPK Suspects False Wealth Declaration

Tirana Prosecutor Arben Nela is facing the Independent Qualification Commission (KPK) as part of the vetting process.

Arben Nela is competing for a seat in the High Prosecutorial Council.

Nela began his career in 1998 in the Fier District Court. He afterwards served in Durrës until 2008. From 2008, Nela has been a prosecutor in the Tirana District Prosecution Office.

In today’s hearing, the High Inspectorate of the Declaration and Audit of Assets and Conflict of Interest (ILDKPKI) and KPK reported of several inconsistencies in Nela’s wealth declaration.

The prosecutor owns a 121 square meters house in Lanabregas. KPK concluded that there is a lack of financial sources and inaccuracies in the wealth declaration regarding this property.

Nela declared that he only owns one floor of the three-story house, whereas the rest belongs to his father and brother. However, according to KPK, there is no documentation to substantiate this statement.

Nela also owns an apartment in Tirana, valued at €41,000. This purchase was made with the prosecutor’s and his wife’s savings, as well as with a €25,000 loan from his wife’s sister. All the payments for this purchase were made in cash.

Nela opposed the conclusions of the investigation, stating that he declared his wealth truthfully and did not make a false declaration.
