Tirana Public Transport to Resume Today Following Agreement with Municipality

As of today, public transport has resumed in Tirana.

The Municipality of Tirana reached an agreement with operators, following a two-week standoff over claims adhering to medical protocols would bankrupt operators.

The agreement means that some of the protocols will be changed and operators will receive a second ‘war salary’.

For the rest of July, citizens won’t be able to buy monthly tickets, instead, they will have to pay 40 lek each time they travel.

Passenger compliance with protocols will be monitored by Municipal Police. If there are violations, the responsibility falls on the passenger, not the operator.

The rules include:

  • Vehicles will be allowed to travel with 70% capacity;
  • Each passenger must have a mask and gloves both at the bus stop and on the bus;
  • Passengers must keep a distance of 1 meter inside the bus;
  • The driver must be equipped with a mask and gloves;
  • Disinfectant must be provided on the bus;
  • During the trip, air conditioning will be off and the windows must be open.

Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj had previously said he would give the operators contracts to others if they did not start work.
