Two Drowned within a Week, No Lifeguards on Beaches

Despite the government’s claims of improvements in the conditions of the Albanian seaside, the situation on the coasts remains the same: every year, vacationers drown as a result of a lack of lifeguards and lifeguard towers.

A 20-year-old drowned yesterday at the Durrës beach, one of the most popular beaches in the country.

A few days ago, a 22-year-old drowned at another popular beach, Gjiri i Lalzit.

In 2014, the National Coastal Agency trained 41 Academy of Sports students as certified lifeguards; they have never been deployed.

Based on a Council of Ministers ruling, a lifeguard tower must be built for every five private beaches. However, with the tourist season already begun, the country’s beaches offer no safety measures whatsoever.
