Two miners have died in a tragic accident in a chrome mine in Tropoje in the north of Albania on Saturday.
The incident took place in the village of Kepenek in the Bytyc part of the municipality. The mine in question is just over a kilometre from the village.
Miners Adil Dautaj and Afrim Zhutaj were pulled out from the mine after one of the galleries, owned by company Editi-A, collapsed. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.
The police said the incident and the cause of the collapse is still being investigated but the technical manager of the mine has been arrested on charges of violating safety rules.
In 2017, one miner was killed and another was seriously injured at the same mine.
Mining in Albania remains a perilous job with over 20 miners being killed in the last three years alone.
