The US State Department has congratulated Prime Minister Edi Rama on his victory in the Sunday elections in Albania, and called for the election result to be recognized.
“The U.S. congratulates the people of Albania on their recent elections. We look forward to continuing our close partnership with Prime Minister Rama and commend the opposition’s strong campaign. Respect for the results of legitimate elections strengthens Albania’s democracy,” spokesperson Ned Price stated on Twitter.
US Ambassador to Albania Yuri Kim also congratulated Rama on his victory, as well as opposition leader Lulzim Basha on his Democratic Party campaign.
“We congratulate PM Edi Rama and the Socialist Party on their electoral victory. We also congratulate DP Chair Lulzim Basha for leading a strong campaign that gave voice to many & inspired hope. Most importantly, we congratulate the Albanian people, who spoke clearly,” Kim stated in a tweet.
She called on the opposition to recognize the election result and cooperate with the winners.
“By recognizing the results of this election & cooperating with each other, leaders will be acting responsibly for the benefit of the Albanian people,” Kim wrote.
Finally, Ambassador Kim urged the police and prosecution to prosecute those who obstructed people’s right to vote freely.
