The US Embassy in Kosovo has supported indictments for war crimes against President Hashim Thaci and former Speaker of Parliament Kadri Veseli as “a step forward in the process of justice and reconciliation in the Western Balkans.”
In a press release reported by local media, the embassy noted that the indictments have taken 20 years to prepare, and urged the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office in the Hague to continue their independent work.
The embassy considered the indictments as “essential for the advancement of the rule of law” and justice for innocent victims in Kosovo.
On Wednesday, the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office announced that Thaci and Veseli were among several others who could face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Thaci, who had departed Pristina for Washington DC to attend a Kosovo-Serbia summit at the White House, decided to abort his trip when the news broke out. The summit was subsequently cancelled.
