Vetevendosje Announces Third Independent Candidate in Albanian Elections

The Albanian branch of Kosovo’s Vetevendosje party has presented its third MP candidate to run in Albania’s April 25 elections.

Architect and activist Kreshnik Merxhani will run in Gjirokaster, the nonprofit organization announced on Sunday.

Merxhani has actively opposed the demolition of the National Theater in Tirana, and has been engaged in a number of culture and heritage projects in Gjirokaster.

Two other candidates from Vetevendosje are collecting signatures to run in Tirana and Lezhe.

Another independent candidate who has started collecting signatures is Elton Debreshi, the head of the Bulqiza Miners’ Union, who is expected to run in Diber. He is running on the promise to get the Miner Status, a law protecting miners, approved in parliament.

The Electoral Code requires independent candidates to submit signatures of at least one percent of the voters number in a given constituency.
