Vetting Confirms Judge Who Cleared Former Minister of Drug Trafficking Charges

The Independent Qualifications Commission has confirmed the incumbent Judge of the Court against Corruption and Organized Crime Flora Hajredinaj.

Hajredinaj is one of three judges on the panel that tried the case of former Minister Saimir Tahiri.

In September 2019, she, along with Irena Gjoka and Ardit Mustafaj,  acquitted former Interior Minister Tahiri of all charges of drug trafficking and sentenced him to 5 years in prison for abuse of office.

The decision was made on Friday by a panel consisting of Brunilda Bekteshi, Olsi Komici and Firdes Shuli.

Hajredinaj was confirmed in office although during the administrative investigation, the Commission found problems with the justification of assets in at least two cases.

The judge had declared as sources of income for the purchase of an apartment a bank loan in the amount of €39,000, marital savings of €13,000, and a gift from the father-in-law of €40,000.

According to the Commission, the judge could not justify with legal sources the saving of €13,000. The Commission also raised doubts whether her father-in-law had the opportunity to save and gift her €40,000.

The judge said that her husband’s family had income from the rents of two bars in the town of Bajram Curri and from the work of the family members living abroad. She was unable to provide any documents to prove this.

Despite the problems with the declaration of assets, the Commission decided to confirm her in office.
