Vodafone has announced that its European network will be 100% green by July 2021, including its operations in Albania.
The company made the pledge yesterday, stating that all of their operations will be powered by 100% renewable electricity. They also announced the Green Gigabit Net for customers in 11 markets. This will grow sustainably, using power derived only from solar, wind, or hydropower sources.
Vodafone said it will assist business customers in reducing their own carbon emissions by a total of 350 million tonnes globally over the next decade. This is a highly ambitious target and equals the total annual carbon emissions in the UK.
Previously, the telecoms company had promised to improve the lives of 1 billion people while cutting its environmental impact in two. Then in 2019, they committed to buying all electricity from renewable sources and reusing, recycling, or reselling 100% of its network waste.
The new pledge was developed in cooperation with the Carbon Trust, global experts in carbon and sustainability. The Trust calculated the amount of emissions Vodafone has already helped customers avoid, and has assisted the company in setting new targets.
Green Gigabit Net will be active across Vodafone’s European networks including Albania, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Romania, Ireland, Hungary and Czech Republic. Implementation will be complete no later than July 2021, one year from now.
