In honor of Earth Day earlier this week, a group of ex-pats and Albanians took to the beaches of Durres to clean up plastic waste.
The group of concerned individuals worked in conjunction with civil society organization Durresi Aktiv to collect bags of mainly plastic waste from the beach.
This is the third such citizen-led initiative in two weeks whereby teams of volunteers have taken it upon themselves to clear areas out outstanding natural beauty from man-made waste. Last weekend, hundreds of volunteers cleaned up the shores of Lake Fierza in Kukes and took tonnes of plastic to a recycling plant in Vlora.
The week before, in conjunction with local businesses, volunteers cleaned plastic and other waste from Lake Koman in the north of the country.
The Albanian government does not recycle waste and both Tirana and Durres are some of the biggest contributors of plastic pollution to the sea in the region.
