Zharrëz Marchers Clash With Police, One Wounded

The hunger strikers from Zharrëz who today arrived in Tirana after a four-day marathon march have clashed with the police forces regarding the installation of a tent in front of the Ministry of Energy. According to the police, the citizens didn’t receive a permit from the police to protest or to install a tent. One of the protesters had to be hospitalized with light injuries.

The hunger strikers declared that they will not leave the ministry without receiving a response to their plight: compensation for their houses damaged by the oil drilling activities of Bankers Petroleum, and the suspension of its activities.

A few hours ago, the hunger strikers met with Deputy Prime Minister Niko Peleshi. They said that the conversation was positive and that they agreed that several experts would verify the damage to their houses in Zharrëz. The protesters emphasized that in spite of this result, they will not leave Tirana until all the necessary procedures have been completed.
