In an interview with Deutsche Welle, EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn commented on the proceedings of the Trieste Summit, as well as the EU enlargement agenda.
According to Commissioner Hahn, the EU “is concretely holding negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro, with the others we are still far away.”
The idea of setting up a Regional Economic Area in the Balkans is to serve on the one hand as a way of harmonizing the different internal markets, facilitating later EU integration, as well as creating lasting stability in the region:
We want to bring all six countries of the Western Balkans together, independent of the level that they have arrived at in the EU accession process.
