Italian Parliament Passes Call Center Law

Yesterday, the Italian Parliament passed with a majority of votes a new law on sustainability, which contains an article preventing the outsourcing of callcenters outside of Italy.

Practically, the implementation of this law will make it impossible, especially for smaller call center companies that receive financial aid from the government, to leave the country.

As the European Union prohibits internal market blockades, this law will particularly affect outsourcing to non-EU countries such as Albania, while conversely outsourcing to EU countries such as Romania and Bulgaria, where Italian is also often spoken as a second language, becomes more attractive to Italian companies.

It is as yet uncertain how much actual impact the law will have on the Italian call centers in Albania, which employ about 35,000 Albanians. What is certain is that the negotiation attempts of the Albanian government to prevent the law from passing in its current form have failed.
