The annual report of the Agency for the Security of Deposits it appears that the wealth gap between the wealthy and poor population in Albania has grown significantly over 2016.
There are about 100,000 bank accounts containing more than 2.5 million lekë with a total value of around €3.7 billion euro, or 45% of all personal bank deposits. The average amount of these deposits is around €37,000. The number of these “rich” accounts has increased with 12% over last year, adding 10,600 accounts.
The remaining piece of 55% of all deposits with a value below 2.5 million lekë contains about €4.5 billion euro, with an average of €1,900.
The data provided in the report also show that there are more bank accounts than people in Albania, meaning that many have multiple accounts in different currencies (lekë and euro) and often at more than one bank.
