Attempt to Fill Constitutional Court Vacancies Fails as Candidates Are Disqualified and Withdraw

Six Constitutional Court candidates were disqualified and three others withdrew their candidacies during a July 17 Justice Appointments Council (KED) meeting.

This leaves no candidates available to fill the two Constitutional Court vacancies announced by Parliament on August 21, 2019 and President Ilir Meta on September 27, 2019.

KED will now have to reopen the call for applications for Constitutional Court candidacies, and, if this pace is kept up, Albania will not have a fully functioning Constitutional Court until at least January 2021.
