260 Apartment Blocks, over Two Thousand Houses Uninhabitable after Albanian Earthquake

The number of heavily damaged and currently uninhabited apartment blocks in Albania is 261, while 2,237 houses have been found uninhabitable after checks so far. 851 apartment blocks have incurred medium to low levels of damage.

In a meeting of the National Reconstruction Committee today, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the latest results of the ongoing checks following the November 26 earthquake that left 51 dead. He added that a final report will be available by the end of January 2020.

Rama said roughly 500 experts have been employed in checking damaged buildings in affected areas, 81 of which come from 11 different countries and the rest are Albanian.

The prime minister said some of the heavily damaged apartment blocks can be made safe after reconstruction but assessment is still under way.

He specifically assured the public that part of the “Emin Duraku” school that remained open was safe, and that it had undergone multiple inspections. An adjacent older building in the school was declared unsafe and closed.
