80-Year-Old Man Arrested for Allegedly Sexually Harassing Two Minor Girls

The police has apprehended an 80-year-old man and has referred his case to the Prosecutor’s Office in Tirana for further investigations, as he is suspected of harassing two minor girls.

This is the second reported case of child sexual abuse in the last two weeks in Albania. The news of the alleged rape of a fifteen-year-old girl in Mirditë sparked outrage as activists and citizens held numerous protests across Albania against the sexual violence  experienced by children and women.

Activists demand harsher penalties for abusers, the implementation of a comprehensive sex education curriculum in schools, and more social workers and psychologists to address survivors’ needs.

Resentment has been growing in the past two years as instances of protracted sexual abuse and revenge porn have become public at an alarming rate, while experts report that still only 3% of sexual abuse cases is ever reported to the police.
