Albanians are the 6th largest non-EU group holding residence permits in the European Union. The total number is 868,000 or equivalent to 31% of the current population of Albania.
As per data from Eurostat, the number one spot went to Morocco with 2 million, followed by Turkey (1.9 million), Ukraine (1.3 million), China (including Hong Kong 1 million), and Syria (974,000). Albania has more EU residents than Russia (689,000), India (555,000) and Serbia (504,000).
Between 2010 and 2019, some 193,000 Albanians applied for asylum in EU countries and some 360,699 left in 2019 alone. Many of these went to pursue work and education.
