Kosovo Suspends Road Construction after Serbia’s Complaint

The government of Kosovo has suspended the construction of a road connecting Kosovo with Montenegro, after Serbia complained that it endangered the heritage of a monastery in Deçan and jeopardized the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.

In a press statement on Sunday, Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti ordered the suspension of works following Serbia President Aleksandar Vučić’s complaint.

He called on local authorities to comply with the Constitutional Court decision of 2016 recognizing ownership of the land, where part of the new road falls, to the Orthodox monastery of Deçan.

He stressed the need to find other legal and practical ways to enable the completion of the road connecting Kosovo with Montenegro while preserving Kosovo’s cultural and religious heritage.
