A 32-year-old woman has testified to the police that she gave birth to a stillborn baby in the 7th month of gestation, and abandoned it in a bin in the Ali Demi part of Tirana.
The woman was arrested by police yesterday after the discovery was made. The baby, a boy, was discovered by neighbours. The woman told authorities that the baby was born prematurely and was not alive.
The phenomenon of women abandoning their stillborn babies is not unheard of. The women, suffering shock, trauma and sometimes a feeling of shame, are driven to take such actions. Once cause of death is determined, women are usually not prosecuted for the incident.
