Albanians will go to the polls on 25 April 2021 to elect their representatives in parliament.
President Ilir Meta decreed the date on Sunday, following consultations with party leaders last week.
The Albanian parliament should have 140 members, according to the constitution. Since the opposition left their mandates in protest to government’s alleged vote rigging in collusion with crime gangs, it’s had less than the required number. The 2021 general election is expected to correct the issue.
The upcoming election follows the bipartisan electoral reform agreed in June 2020. The opposition later denounced the government’s move to bring changes to the constitution that would affect the agreement.
