Opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) has accused Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti of dismissing the country’s chief of police Rashit Qalaj on Friday after he ordered the arrest of the deputy head of the ruling party, Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).
In a press statement, the PDK said the dismissal was “arbitrary”, and that it negatively affects the independent institution that is the Kosovo Police.
The timing of the dismissal, within one week from the arrest of LDK deputy leader, Haki Rugova for abuse of power, “suggests that it is a revenge act against law enforcement institutions,” the second largest opposition party stated.
It added that the dismissal is “an attempt for state capture” by the ruling party, and it’s an encouragement for organized crime, “which has been hit with dedication and efficiency by Director Qalaj”.
