International Union Asks Rama to Talk with Oil Workers on Hunger Strike

The IndustriALL Global Union (IGU) and its European branch have called on Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to engage the government and resolve the issues pushing oil workers into hunger strike.

“We find this situation outrageous and unacceptable: it is a clear violation of national labor law, and international core labor standards,” they wrote in a letter to Rama, published by the Albanian Union of United Oil Workers.

IGU represents over 50 million workers worldwide.

They stressed the lack of progress since they discussed the issue with Rama in April, but also welcomed his recent engagement with statements inviting oil workers to end the hunger strike.

They are asking for 10 unpaid monthly salaries to be paid.

Rama says the issue is between workers and the private company, and the government has no responsibility.

He has recently asked them to end the hunger strike in order for the government to consider sitting in talks with workers.
