Following the Director of the Institute of Public Health stating that COVID-19 mutations are present in Albania, but they don’t know which ones, and the Minister of Health saying there are no mutations in the country, the former has provided further clarification.
Head of Epidemiology at the IPH, Silva Bino appeared on television last night and explained that in PCR tests they are able to tell that it’s not the same virus as before but they cannot tell which one it is.
“In the emerging PCR tests, there are signs that it is not the same virus as before, but we do not know which one it is, that of South Africa or any other country.”
She added there were at least two people in Elbasan who are suspected of being infected with a mutation. Bino said that Albania is part of an international network through which it sends suspected samples to special laboratories.
