Albanian President Ilir Meta requested the Assembly and the Government to extend the validity period of identification documents, so that people can vote on April 25 using the old ones.
Through a letter addressed to these two institutions, Meta asked the renewal deadline extension until April 30.
He added that “there are about 800 thousand citizens whose deadline documents has expired, almost half of the participants in previous general elections, which is a very disturbing fact”
“The right to vote shall not be denied.These measures will serve citizens’ right to vote and preserve the Integrity of the Electoral Processes”, Meta said.
He also called on the Ministry of Interior to take all necessary measures and legislative initiative to stop the creation of long queues on counters, which may come to increase, due to documents renewal on the approaching date of elections.
Later in the day, the Central Election Commission also announced it had requested the same from the government.
