Kosovo Set for 2nd Day of Attempt to Elect New President

The Kosovo Assembly is set for a second day of voting on the country’s new President on Sunday.

Speaker Glauk Konjufca set today’s session for 5 p.m. following two failures on Saturday to reach the necessary quorum of two thirds (80) MPs for the vote to be valid.

In two consecutive votes to elect between the two candidates, Vjosa Osmani and Nasuf Baftiu, only 78 and 79 votes were cast, falling short of just one MP for the vote to be valid.

The constitution requires at least 80 MPs to participate in the voting on the new President. The first two rounds need 80 votes in favor, the third one requires 61 votes. A failure of the third round takes the country to snap elections.
