Albanian Orthodox Christians are celebrating Easter for a second year amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
“It is our obligation to constantly contribute to easing tensions around us, to de-escalating polarizations, conflicts and various variants of hatred,” Archbishop Anastasios of Albania stressed in his message to believers.
“Inspired and empowered by the glorious celebration of Easter, which is above all the celebration of universal reconciliation, let us try to make peace personally, forgiving even those who hate us, even if it seems difficult,” he added.
It marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ after he was crucified on Good Friday, symbolizing His defeat over death and triumph of life.
According to a 2011 census, 10 percent of Albanians are Catholic Christians.
Participation in last year’s masses in churches was not allowed due to pandemic restrictions but this year’s restrictions appeared more lax as hundreds of people attended masses across the country.
Albanian emigrants coming from Greece to celebrate Easter are required to quarantine for 2 weeks.
