European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi has argued that Albania has met all EU conditions and is ready to start accession talks, but North Macedonia still needs to get Bulgaria’s approval.
Albania is thus ready to sit in the first intergovernmental conference with the EU, according to the European Commission.
Speaking from North Macedonia on Tuesday, during his regional tour in the Western Balkans to deliver first butches of EU-funded vaccines, Varhelyi said that the EU may decouple the two countries in their EU accession path in case no deal is reached between North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
Bulgaria has blocked the start of EU talks with North Macedonia over claims of incomplete implementation of a 2017 bilateral agreement for good neighborly relations.
Varhelyi is visiting Albania today.
