The European Union Ambassador to Albania Luigi Soreca will receive a 24-hour security protection detail from the Albanian government.
The government’s decision was published in the Official Government Gazette, without providing any rationale for this unusual move.
Exit News contacted the EU Delegation in Tirana to inquire after the reason for such protection and whether it was the Delegation that asked for it.
The response was that the EU Delegation does “not comment on security arrangements, which are decided on by the Albanian government.”
The Italian Luigi Soreca has held the position of Ambassador in Albania since 2018 and has one year left of his term.
In 2017, the government made a similar decision for the then EU ambassador Romana Vlahutin—after she allegedly received threats due to her role in the justice reform, which instituted a vetting process for all Albanian judges and prosecutors.
While Albanian law allows the provision of protection detail to foreign ambassadors by special decision of the Council of Ministers, there have been no other cases in recent years.
