Albanian President Demands Immediate Solution to Waste Crisis in Kavaje

On Monday, Albanian President Ilir Meta asked the Municipality of Kavaje to take “immediate action” to address the dangerous situation created by the incineration of waste around the tourist village of Spille, near the Albanian coast.

In a Facebook post, Meta said that the situation in Kavaja amounts to “an environmental crime.”

According to him, the establishment of this illegal landfill risks harming the health of residents and tourists, as well as Albania’s image, given that the country is now entering the “peak of tourist season.”

Currently, some of Kavaja’s urban waste is disposed of at an improvised landfill near Spille, and then burned at night, causing a spike in pollution.

The situation in Spille emerged as the nearby city of Durres is in the middle of a continuous waste management emergency as well.
