Head of Kosovo Financial Intelligence Fired after Blackmail Allegations

On Tuesday, the Kosovo Ministry of Finance fired the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (NIF) Dard Nuhiu after an audiotape revealed he was implicated in blackmail.

The decision was taken after Shqip.com, a local media outlet, released an audiotape where Nuhiu can be heard talking about the information he had gathered on several influential people and heads of institutions. In the recording, Nuhiu said that he plans to use this information to stage a “take over” of Kosovo media.

Nuhiu has been the head of Kosovo’s Financial Intelligence Unit since 2011.

The tape was released as part of a larger investigation into state capture by Shqip.com. The investigation looked into how blackmail, favors, and bribery influence the work of government institutions and media. The collected evidence implicates also prosecutors, judges, heads of agencies, and journalists.
