Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama thanked Bulgarian opposition leader Boyko Borissov after the country’s parliament approved a mandate to lift the veto on North Macedonia’s EU accession.
Rama took to Twitter to acknowledge Borissov’s “defining role in getting rid of the [veto].”
“Just got a call from @BoykoBorissov. I couldn’t thank him enough for his kind thought to call me, but could thank him for his defining role in getting rid of the VETO in parliament! Real friend, real leader. His party GERB&Others saved the face of Bulgaria&EU! Now EU should act fast!”.
On Wednesday, Borissov, who is partly responsible for initiating the veto, called for it to be lifted and said his party would vote in favor of such a resolution.
Rama’s praise of Borissov stands in sharp contrast to his Thursday speech in Brussels, where he referred to Bulgaria’s behavior as a “disgrace.”
Sofia retorted on Friday, calling Rama’s comments as “unprovoked”, “harsh”, “insulting”, and “a low level of language” and said they cannot be justified by a lack of European communication skills.
On Twitter, Rama had a response for this statement as well, writing on Twitter that if Bulgaria has in issue with his language, “I have an issue too with the way Bulgaria wants to solve bilateral issues by using the enlargement process as e vehicle of kidnapping two NATO countries! Easy friends:Lift the VETO or bear with me!”.
