Albanian Prime Minister: EU Outdated and Needs to Be Changed

Prime Minister Edi Rama has once again poked fun at Brussels and the EU accession process, this time during an interview in Amsterdam.

The Albanian prime minister has been very vocal in his displeasure with the accession process,  the “impotence” of the EU, and the veto exercised by Bulgaria over Skopje and de facto Tirana.

“The way the EU works is outdated. It must be changed, it is outdated,” he said on the topic of Bulgaira “taking two other countries hostage”.

He added that the situation in the Balkans is “crazy” regarding how countries perceive themselves and each other.

“We think Darwin’s evolution started with us. The Greeks think Holland is an old village of Ancient Greece, they even think they came before the monkeys. If you ask us, Napoleon was Albanian. And yes, Serbia. These are things that should not be discussed at a European level,” he said, reiterating that historical matters such as those between Bulgaria and North Macedonia are not a matter for the accession process.

He continued by comparing EU accession to a bride. “We are waiting for the bride to come from Brussels, but in one year, two years, three years, she never came. If she comes to marry us without music and immediately in bed and having children, let her come.”

“Of course, I am joking, but imagine you want to get married and the bride never shows up”.
