Some 6,198 foreign citizens were deported from Germany between January and June 2022, with Albanians and Macedonians topping the list in terms of returnees, according to data from German federal authorities.
Both countries are EU hopefuls and received the go-ahead to start negotiations in June of this year, but both still struggle with mass emigration, illegal and irregular migration, and unfounded, and founded asylum applications.
Of those who returned, 454 were Macedonians, and 402 were Albanian. After these two nationalities came Georgians and Turks.
Albania however, holds the record for the most asylum seekers in EU countries. In 2021, 13,210 Albanian asylum seekers were registered in the EU, mainly in France, Belgium, and Germany. Thousands more applied in the US. Out of these, hundreds are granted asylum every year despite Albania being officially, a safe country of origin.
North Macedonia contributed just 3,020 asylum seekers during last year, some 10,000 less than its neighbour.
British authorities also said Thursday that more than half of the migrants crossing the English Channel by boat to arrive illegally in the United Kingdom were from Albania — a significant increase from last year.
