Serbian President Unveils new Cabinet, 6 Months after Election

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić presented a new government on Sunday, led by his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), six months after a parliamentary election won by the SNS and their coalition partners.

The key new-old names are Ana Brnabić as the prime minister and Sinisa Mali as the finance minister, while former parliament speaker Ivica Dačić of the junior coalition partner, the Socialist party, will be the foreign minister.

Brnabić said the new government would not be “pro-Russian” as reported by some regional media.

“We have strong names, experts, in the new government. This is a pro-Serbian government, there is no East or West, it’s a government that will defend our national interests,” she said.

The proposed government has yet to be confirmed by parliament but it is a formality as the SNS-led coalition has an absolute majority in parliament.

A surprise is the exclusion of Energy Minister Zorana Mihajlović, who will have no post in the new government, as well as of the outgoing Defence Minister Nebojsa Stefanović.

Another surprise is the nomination of Tomislav Žigmanov, a representative of an ethnic Croat party, as the minister for human and minority rights.

It is still not known who will be the minister of information and telecommunications, and the minister for public investments, Danas.rs reported.
