The Constitutional Court has sent the Venice Commission an updated translation of the vetting law. The new version provides a better English translation but presents no fundamental changes from the previous version.
The Democratic Party (PD) had requested the submission of a better translation, as the first version contained erroneous translations of technical terms that could have influenced the Commission’s decision making.
The PD had appealed the vetting law at the Constitutional Court, which in October forwarded it to the Venice Commission for an opinion as regards the “compliance of the law with the European Convention of Human Rights and the Constitution of the Republic of Albania.”
The vetting law is one of the crucial components of the judicial reform. The government has claimed that passing the vetting law is the only condition for the opening of EU accession negotiations. A response from the Venice Commission is expected in December.
