The United Kingdom is a free country. The British people love freedom and this is the country where all the rights are manifested. They voted to go out of the European Union and they voted to be free again. Throughout the history the UK has made important decisions and leaving the EU has been the toughest of all. The British thought the consequences in details and gave their verdict. Did they make the right decision?
Firstly, no more taxes to be paid to the European Union. The money is kept inside the UK territory and be used for investments inside the country. The United Kingdom feels free to decide who comes and goes. The movement of people is controlled. This cannot be taken as a sign of nationalism but the right of the free movement has made the UK the house of many Europeans living and working there. Since 1978, the membership of the UK in the European Union has brought losses rather than gains to the United Kingdom. These losses are in economy, politics, environment etc. The British government wants to pass their own laws without being influenced on the EU laws. The UK is strong enough to think of legislation without being dependant on the European Union. During all these times, the British laws are passed by thinking of the economic impact that they can have on the European Union. The way the British think is 100 years in advance in comparison with the other countries of the European Union.
By voting against being the EU, they voted not to follow the bureaucracy of the governmental structures of EU. When we talk about the European Union we talk about the integration of countries but what should Britain be integrated about? It is a consolidated democracy. By voting to leave, the United Kingdom decided to be Harold’s Pinter Dumb Waiter. The UK neither listens nor speaks about the affairs, laws, decisions to be made about other countries. The concentration will be on domestic and foreign affairs of the country. The EU family tends to grow bigger. The European Family has got standards and rules to adopt. This is not anymore the United Kingdom’s concern. Being out of the EU gives the United Kingdom all the power not to finance the European country and invest only in the domestic economy. The European family tends to harmonize the relations between the states, free movement, free trade, freedom rights, investment, standards, rules to follow up and laws. The priority of the UK now is strengthening the economy, raising the quality and the quantity and prioritizes the national industrial ‘lions’ of the country. The EU single market has brought disadvantages to the companies that are vulnerable. The UK will establish its own trade rules once it leaves the EU. By exiting the EU, the UK will be free to control its own nation’s borders and immigration, regenerate Englishness and give advantage to the British citizens rather than European ones.
It seems that UK will save a lot of money after tying the umbilical cord with EU. No membership in the EU will mean less fees, expenses and money lost for the EU. The UK can think and rethink its own self by becoming a powerful economy challenging other Superpowers but also collaborating with them. Even though, the United Kingdom can be out of the single market, it can play an important in the world economy. The Exit of the UK should be done with compromise and the EU should find all the peaceful means to be done in this way.
The United Kingdom gave the verdict about what its relation with Europe is and the most democratic means were used. The UK wanted to identify what its role in the world is. Having behind a history of culture, tradition and a powerful economy, The UK wanted to create its own identity and wanted its voice to be heard again. The Eurozone was coping with crisis again. The domino effect was so apparent. The concept of Europe has to be reconsidered again. The UK is leaving EU and Brexit is in process. It seems that the process would last. The UK has deep roots in the EU despite the reluctance that had existed so far. Is it going to be a ‘hard’ Brexit or there will be negotiation and compromise? What is going to happen with the UK during the process and outside the process of leaving EU? The separation will include meetings, drafts, approvals, ratifications and negotiations in order to come to an end of the split. The UK in EU has its own history, long years of discussions and debates, agreements and disagreements. Experiencing Brexit is new to the European Union because the tendency for the other countries is to enter and remain not to exit it.
The EU has been a dream for many countries but will it be a nightmare by being out of it? Is it going to be a ‘soft’ farewell? One thing is sure the United Kingdom knows what it does. It knows the paths it should follow.
