Former President and former Prime Minister of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović has won yesterday’s presidential election.
Đukanović, the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) candidate, won approximately 53.8% of the vote, according to the (yet to be final) results reported by the Election Monitoring Center.
The runner-up candidate is Mladen Bojanić with 33.5% of the vote. The four remaining candidates have failed to achieve more than 10% of the vote.
Participation in the election measured at about 64%. Montenegro Albanians had come out in favor of Đukanović during the electoral campaign.
With this victory, Đukanović returns as Montenegro’s president, a position he retained from 1998 to 2002.
Additionally, Đukanović also served as Prime Minister of Montenegro for three consecutive terms, from 2003 until 2016 when he resigned.
Milo Đukanović is seen as a strong supporter of Montenegro’s accession into the EU. Under his leadership, the country entered NATO, recognized Kosova’s independence and consistently positioned itself as pro-EU and opposed to Russia.
During the length of his career, however, Đukanović has been also accused of corruption, nepotism, and authoritarian behavior.
