Prosecutor Petrit Fusha of the General Prosecution Office resigned today, consequently avoiding the vetting process.
Today, he submitted his resignation to the High Prosecutorial Council (KLP) and Independent Qualification Commission (KPK) in which he stated that “The prosecution office is no longer the place where I can serve with my 32-year-long experience.”
Since January 15th, 2018, Prosecutor Fusha was part of the list of magistrates to be vetted by the KPK but so far no hearing date was scheduled for him. According to the vetting law, following his resignation the KPK should drop the vetting of Fusha.
In August 2016, the media alleged that Prosecutor Fusha had influenced the investigations into the death of the 17-year-old Ardit Gjoklaj, whose body was found in the Sharra Landfill where he was employed illegally.
In December 2016, Mayor Erion Veliaj and Prosecutor Petrit Fusha were photographed while having lunch together at one of Tirana’s restaurants.
Ardit Gjoklaj’s case was closed last month, when the court found Dëfrim Hakrama (supervisor of employees) and Edmond Kallari (excavator driver) innocent. The prosecution had accused both the supervisor and driver as being responsible for the death of the 17-year-old Ardit Gjoklaj.
