Rama and Pompeo’s Differing Version of Events Following Meeting

Prime Minister Rama and the US State Department have made two different statements on the topics discussed yesterday between Secretary Mike Pompeo and Rama.

According to a press release published on the State Department website, Mike Pompeo and Edi Rama discussed Albania’s EU membership, priorities of the OSCE Albanian presidency, justice and electoral reform, NATO commitments, and for actions against Iranian “malignant” activities.

The Secretary emphasized the strong US support for Albania’s EU membership, justice reform and electoral reform efforts.

The Secretary also congratulated the Prime Minister on his government’s unwavering commitment to separating NATO obligations, actions against malignant Iranian activity, and taking a leadership role in protecting next-generation communications networks,” said the spokesperson of the State Department, Morgan Ortagus.

Whereas Rama said that he discussed with Pompeo about the post-earthquake reconstruction plan, the Anti-Corruption Package, the Mini-Schengen and Kosovo-Serbia dialogue all of which are domestically controversial topics.

“In the office of Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo we discussed reconstruction, the Anti-KCK Package [Anti-Corruption Pacakge], the Mini-Schengen and Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, as well as the common challenges of our strategic alliance, where Albania remains faithful to the United States of America,” wrote Rama on Facebook.
