Secretary General of Europa Nostra Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović has refuted Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama’s claim that Europa Nostra had offered €1 million to renovate the National Theater.
Yesterday, when asked why he had not answered the letter sent by Europa Nostra regarding the renovation of the Theater, Rama said that he had not deigned to do so because the idea that the “unrenovatable” building could be renovated with €1 million was “ridiculous.”
However, Mihailović explained that including a site in the Most Endangered Heritage Sites list is an incentive to private and public powers to act to rescue it.
“If there would have been political will from the authorities in Albania,” Mihailović said, “[Europa Nostra] certainly could have recommended to the European Commission and European Union to consider providing funds.” She added that there is no doubt the EU would have taken the matter of providing funds for the restoration of the Theater very seriously.
