Albania Coronavirus Update, 22 April: 27 Dead, 25 New Cases, 356 Recovered, 634 Total

The total number of those infected with COVID-19 in Albania has risen to 634 with 25 new cases identified in the last 24 hours.

In addition to this, one patient has succumbed to the virus, bringing the total number of deaths to 27. The Ministry of Health announced that a 71-year-old man from Durres died at the Shefqet Ndroqi hospital in Tirana. He was suffering from diabetes, heart disease, arrhythmia and other health issues. 

A new hotbed of infection has been identified in the country in Kruja where cases were found in a tailors shop before spreading between workers and their families.

The Ministry announced that 356 people have recovered with Berat, Lezha, Mirdita, Rrogozhina, and Tropoje with good rates of recovery amongst those affected. 11 were cured in the last 24 hours.

During the last 24 hours, the Ministry carried out 252 tests on suspected cases, 25 of which came back positive. They stated that the epidemiological investigation and tracking of contacts in Kruja is ongoing as there is a total of 18 positive cases there. Other new cases include Tirana, Elbasan, Shkodra, and Kurbin.

A total of 6,669 tests have been conducted so far. There are currently 251 active cases of the virus in Albania with eight in intensive care.

The geographical distribution of cases is as follows: Tirana (256), Durres (42), Lushnje (6), Elbasan (18), Fier (36), Kavaja (9), Rrogozhine (4), Korce (19), Vlore (5), Shkoder (100), Lezhe (14), Berat (2), Has (13), Kruje (58), Tropoje (4), Mirdita (3), Kukes (11), Mallakster (1), Kurbin (28).

Despite the high number of cases per day, the Ministry insists that the situation is under control and that the real indicator of the situation is how many hospitalisations there are. This, they said remains stable.
