Albania Ranks Highest in Region for Number of Inmates

Albania ranks highest in the Balkans and fourth in Europe for the highest number of prisoners,  with 197 prisoners for every 100,000 inhabitants, according to a Eurostat report.

The country ranks behind Lithuania, which holds first place with 231 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the Czech Republic (209) and Estonia (206).

Albania are Montenegro have 179 inmates, Serbia 153, Northern Macedonia 146 inmates, and Kosovo has 90 inmates per 100,000 inhabitants.

Neighboring EU countries of Italy and Greece have 97 and 93 inmates per 100,000 inhabitants.

Iceland has the lowest number of inmates in the EU, only 38 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants. Next in the list are Finland (56), Sweden (57) and Denmark (59).
