Albania Ratifies Convention against Violence and Harassment in the Workplace

The Albanian Parliament voted unanimously to ratify the International Labour Organization’s 2019 Convention against violence and harassment in the workplace during its Thursday session (3 February).

Originally adapted in 2019, the Convention “is the first international treaty to recognize the right of everyone to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence and harassment.”

Governments that ratify it are required to implement laws and policies to prevent and address violence and harassment in the workplace.

Socialist MP Mirela Pitushi who presented the draft law to Parliament said that it would help fill in gaps in Albania’s legal framework for safety in the work place, as well as bring it into line with EU legislation.

According to Pitushi, by ratifying the Convention, Albania hopes to help victims of workplace harassment and raise awareness about violence at work.

The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health are tasked with foreseeing the implementation of the convention.
