Albania Signs EU Declaration on the Rights of Afghan Women and Girls

“Afghan women and girls, as all Afghan people, deserve to live in safety, security, and dignity. Any form of discrimination and abuse should be prevented. We in the international community stand ready to assist them with humanitarian aid and support, to ensure that their voices can be heard.”

This was part of a declaration made by the European Union and signed by various countries including Albania. Other signatories include Australia, Canada, Chile, North Macedonia, the UK, and the USA.

The text expresses their deep worry over the wellbeing of Afghan women and girls, including their right to education, work, and freedom of movement. It calls on those in positions of power in the country to guarantee their protection.

“We will monitor closely how any future government ensures rights and freedoms that have become an integral part of the life of women and girls in Afghanistan during the last 20 years.”

Albania is awaiting the arrival of an as of yet undisclosed number of refugees who will stay in the country while they await the processing of their US visas.
