As of 1 January 2022, Albania has a mandate as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. This is the first time Albania has held the position, 66 years after joining.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Olta Xhacka said it is an opportunity for Albania to show it is “a serious actor with stable and trustworthy policies, with the serious contribution in security and peace issues.”
She added the country will use its position over the next two years to “advance the case of Kosovo in recognition and membership processes in international organisations,” as Kosovo will always be a “sacred cause” for Albania.
The US Embassy, headed by Ambassador Yuri Kim said they are looking forward to cooperating with Albania to “address the most pressing challenges facing our world today.”
In June 2021, Albania was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, by the UN Parliamentary Assembly. The five permanent members are the US, UK, France, China, and Russia, while all other states have a two-year term in a non-permanent capacity.
