The Central Election Commission in Albania has decided to recount ballots in 114 ballot boxes from the Berat electoral district.
On Thursday, the Committee for Complaints and Sanctions at CEC accepted the opposition’s request to recount ballots in some boxes, starting from today.
A day earlier, the panel denied another request by the opposition for repeat elections in the same district, as well as in Gjirokastër. It reached the conclusion that the irregularities identified did not affect the final result.
In Berat, the opposition party, the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) aims to get one of the 7 parliamentary seats assigned for this district.
The preliminary election results gave 5 mandates to the ruling Socialist Party (PS), and 2 to the Democratic Party (PD). The LSI fell short by 77 of the votes required to get one seat, which it would have been taken from the PS. About 5,300 ballot papers were found to be invalid.
