The Court of Tirana has refused to extradite Mohamed Rageh, an Egyptian citizen who was sentenced to death.
On Friday, judge Artan Gjermeni ruled against extradition requested by Egyptian authorities citing lack of legal guarantees that he will not be executed.
Mohamed Rageh was sentenced to death for murdering one person in the city of Giza in November 2019. He later fled to Albania and was arrested upon arrival in May 2021.
Albania banned capital punishment in 2000 following its membership in the Council of Europe, a leading human rights international organization, in 1995.
