Albanian Education Minister Pledges to Double Social Workers and Psychologists in Schools

The Albanian Ministry of Education has announced that they will be providing more social workers and psychologists in schools as of the new academic year.

Minister Besa Shahini said that the number of professionals will double. She added she hopes that the addition of psychologists will help students in coping with a difficult school year following the earthquake and the pandemic.

The 26 November earthquake plunged moe than 26,000 Albanians into poverty. This is due to damage to their homes and businesses and loss of work premises. Some 54% of those living in areas impacted by the quake, said they were suffering from anxiety, sleep issues and depression following the disaster

These issues were amplified when the pandemic started in March of this year. Economic insecurity, an increase in domestic violence, and uncertainty about the future are expected to continue impacting individuals of all ages in Albania.
